چکیده

Incidence of round heart disease was prevalent in starting turkey poults in studies at our experimental facility. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate two dietary factors that may have contributed to increased susceptibility of poults to round heart disease. Experiment 1 consisted of 4 dietary treatments in which dietary chlorine ranged from 0.17 to 0.29% as a result of salt addition, but dietary sodium was maintained at 0.17%. Experiment 2 consisted of poults fed the same pre-starter (0-3 wk of age) and starter (3-6 wk of age) feeds. The diets were fed either in a mash or crumbled form with or without a posthatch supplement the first day of the experiment. Poults were placed approximately 4 hr after departure from the hatchery. There was no evidence of round heart disease mortality in Experiment 1. According to body weight data, the dietary chlorine requirement was estimated to be 0.21% when adequate dietary sodium and potassium are fed. Mortality was increased in Experiment 2 due to round heart disease when crumbles were fed. The addition of a post-hatch supplement did not affect growth or mortality. The results of these studies indicate that feeding crumbles to poults increased round heart disease incidence starting at 6 days of age due to faster growth rate.

The effect of different levels of sodium chloride on round heart disease in the turkey

Round heart disease is a disease of unknown etiology in turkey. The objective of this study was to examinethe effect of different amounts of sodium chloride in inducing cardiomyopathy in turkey poults. There are some reports that hypoxia and furazolidone can induce cardiomyopathy in turkey. Two hundred 2-day-old turkey poults were wing-banded and placed randomly into 6 groups and 24 replicates ...

Observations on cardiac glycogen in spontaneous round heart disease.

Levels of cardiac glycogen were determined by biochemical assays in turkey poults from an experimental flock with a known high incidence of round heart disease. Levels of cardiac glycogen were significantly higher (p < .05) than in commercial turkeys, but not significantly different in the turkeys that developed spontaneous round heart disease. The high level of cardiac glycogen in the poults o...

Efficacy of Bactocell® and Toyocerin® as Probiotics on Growth Performance, Blood Parameters and Intestinal Morphometry of Turkey Poults

A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the efficacy of Pediococcus acidlactici (Bactocell®) or Baccillus cereus (Toyocerin®)-based probiotics on turkey’s performance, carcass yield, blood parameters and intestinal morphology. A total of 240 1- day-old male Nicholas turkey poults were allocated into three dietary groups with four replicates. A corn-soybean-based diet was used as a basal di...

Ameliorative Effects of Neutral Electrolyzed Water on Growth Performance, Biochemical Constituents, and Histopathological Changes in Turkey Poults during Aflatoxicosis

Different in vitro and in silico approaches from our research group have demonstrated that neutral electrolyzed water (NEW) can be used to detoxify aflatoxins. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the ability of NEW to detoxify B-aflatoxins (AFB₁ and AFB₂) in contaminated maize and to confirm detoxification in an in vivo experimental model. Batches of aflatoxin-contaminated maize...

Effects of Diacetoxyscirpenol and Fusaric Acid on Poults: Individual and Combined Effects of Dietary Diacetoxyscirpenol and Fusaric Acid on Turkey Poult Performance

Turkey poults were randomly placed in batteries and fed one of four dietary treatments: control (C); control plus 4ppm diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS); control plus 300ppm Fusaric Acid (FA); and control plus 4ppm DAS and 300ppm FA (FD). There were 10 poults per pen with 6 replicate pens per treatment. Individual BW, BW gains (BWG) and feed consumption by pen were determined at d6, d12, and d18. Period...
